Happy memories at reunion
Catch-up: The Hastings Jaycees reunion dinner.
The Hastings Jaycees' recent
reunion dinner at Havelock North
Community Centre was attended
by 66 people, made up of past
members and their partners.
The Hastings Jaycees were
active from 1947 to 1987, and
membership was originally lim-
ited to young men aged between
18 and 40.
Membership was opened to
women in 1973, and the reunion
dinner was attended by Terry
Coxon, who admitted the first
New Zealand woman, Angela Ho,
to the Jaycees at Hawera.
Past president David Gore said
in its day, the Jaycees were the
most active and influential club in
It was a real breeding ground
for future local body politicians.

Havelock North] Harry Romaines
and Jeff Whittaker cut their teeth
in the Jaycees,'' says Mr Gore.

fun group to be involved with -- as
testified by the great time we had
the other night.''
The Jaycees trained members
for civic leadership based on the
principles of education, action, fel-
lowship, and service.
Some accomplishments of
the Hastings Jaycees:
1948: Campaigned for the
establishment of a blood bank at

robes for the new city of Hastings,
worn by the first mayor Sir Edwin

drowning, supplied resuscitator
units at Hawke's Bay beaches.

ation was started by Hastings
Jaycee Peter Gifford.
