SITUATED high above the corner of Joll
Rd and Campbell St, the Havelock
North Club boasts panoramas of the
Peak out the back, and stunning vistas
across Havelock North and Hastings out
The views might be worth a million
dollars, but you'll be delighted by the
affordable menu prices at the club's
Sleeping Giant Restaurant, which is
run by chef Tom van Rijk and his wife,
With his surname, it's perhaps
no surprise that since taking over
in December, Tom has earned the
restaurant a reputation for the quality
of its succulent steak and meat dishes,
including the whopping 450gram rump
steak, priced at only $22.
"My father Raymond [from BBQ
Gourmet] is still operating Peak House
Restaurant after 25 years. I was always in
the kitchen with him. I guess you could
say I started my career when I was four
years old," Tom laughs.
Tom refined the culinary skills he
learnt as a youngster during years he
spent travelling through Europe, where
he ended up cheffing in the busiest
tourist districts in Amsterdam, including
the famous Cafe Vertigo, where he met
his future wife, Linda.
Since settling into the Kiwi lifestyle,
the couple has been busy designing
a menu that caters for absolutely
everyone. There's also an ever-changing
specials blackboard, and a different
roast on the menu every week.
"We want to provide honest food in
generous portions," Tom says. "I really
take advantage of the freshness of the
produce we can buy here in Hawke's
Bay -- you don't get that in Europe," says
"And it's been exciting to build
relationships with the club members
and their guests," adds Linda, who is
the friendly face at front-of-house. "We
prefer the personal approach."
A meal at the Havelock North Club
is not just a dining experience, but also
a social occasion. The club offers pool
and billiards, darts, a dance floor, a fully-
stocked bar - with prices as reasonable
as the restaurant -- as well as pokies and
The club can host 200 people and
is available for private functions and
wedding receptions, all of which can be
catered for by Tom and Linda's Vertigo
Catering business, either at the club or
at your own special venue.
The Havelock North Club was founded
61 years ago and still boasts a healthy
membership of 600, and the club's
committee is dedicated to maintaining
the friendly and relaxed atmosphere
currently enjoyed by members, their
families, and their guests.
Generously-sized meals, very reasonable prices,
and commanding views of Te Mata Peak are all
served up at the Sleeping Giant Restaurant at the
Havelock North Club.
