Backing the Bay
by CRAIG FOSS Tukituki National MP
Work has begun at the Hawke s Bay
Museum & Art Gallery site. The former
Lilliput building and the old Planetarium
building are being demolished in prep-
aration for the construction of the new
wing and main entrance.
This will be great for the community
and for tourism in the bay. It is fantastic
to see a local construction company,
Gemco, has been awarded the contract.
The new museum should be completed by
late January 2013.
The changed road markings outside
Clive School are a fine example of a sen-
sible solution to an ongoing problem.
Last month a school zone was created, in
an attempt to have drivers take more
care, particularly at the times when chil-
dren are going to or leaving school. This
has resulted in a major reduction in the
speed of vehicles outside the school.
On June 24, I visited Family Works, at
Lyndon Rd in Hastings. Working along-
side families, the staff provide free early
and effective support to keep children
safe and well and positively engaged in
school. They also run programmes for
children with challenging needs and
parenting programmes. The staff are
keen and passionate about the work they
do.The new Alcohol Reform Package legis-
lation is in response to the public s call
for action. Alcohol is estimated to con-
tribute 1000 deaths a year and is a major
driver of crime.
The aim of the package is to reduce our
binge-drinking culture, especially among
young people and to have less alcohol-
related harm, including deaths, family
violence, drunken disorder and ACC
It will be a conscience vote for National
MPs on the purchase age. I have voted in
the past, and will again this time, to
increase the age for off and on licence
sales to 20 years. If that fails I will vote
for off-licence to be 20 years and on-
licence to be 18 years.

Look out for
A rainbow skink was found in Hawke s
Bay recently, and the Department of
Conservation wants us all to keep an eye
out and inform them of any further
Rainbow skinks are an invasive pest
and pose a threat to our rare native
skinks, says Bryan Welch from DOC.
These Australian natives have created
havoc among native insect and lizard
populations where they invaded, and we
don t want this to happen in Hawke s
Rainbow skinks look very similar to
many native species but can be dis-
tinguished by one unique feature.
The rainbow skink scale pattern on
their head displays one central scale,
whereas our native skinks have two
