A proposed strategy for improving water
quality in the upper Mohaka River and
the Taharua tributary -- a remote area at
the western edge of the Hawke s Bay
region and adjacent to Taupo District -- is
now available for comment by the public.
Declining water quality has been
monitored for some years because of land
use intensification on the pumice soils of
the Taharua catchment. Land use
includes dairying, forestry and some pas-
ture, but there is still native bush in the
The rivers are recognised as top rivers
for trout fishing, and the declining water
quality is affecting trout populations as
well as reducing enjoyment of the river
for recreational users. Restoring the
rivers is close to the heart of local iwi.
The draft strategy to tackle water
quality issues has been developed by the
Hawke s Bay Regional Council and the
Taharua Stakeholder Group, which con-
sists of landowners, Mohaka iwi,
DairyNZ, Federated Farmers, Fonterra,
Fish and Game, the Department of Con-
servation and Taupo District Council.
A summary of the draft strategy is
inside the new regional council magazine
Our Place, which was delivered to homes
in the region in the past week.
The strategy can also be read on the
council s website hbrc.govt.nz and
printed copies are available on request.
After 127 years in the same place, the
former Napier Borough Council building
is moving around the corner.
The building in Napier s Marine Pde,
one of the oldest in the city and a rare
survivor of the 1931 earthquake, has
been moved to make way for the new
Hawke s Bay Museum and Art Gallery.
The category 2-listed structure, built in
1884 on the corner of Tennyson St, was
split for the removal. Three-quarters of
the building was moved last week, with
the rest moved a few days later.
Two large truck-and-trailer units were
used in the removal, which required the
closure of Marine Pde and Browning St.
The building is now in Byron St,
behind the Pania Hotel, where Napier
City Council will use it for storage until
a purpose is decided.
Originally the council planned to
demolish the old building, but the His-
toric Places Trust insisted on keeping it.
The building s old chambers had been
used by the museum as its education cen-
tre.The building lost its original appear-
ance when the council had the exterior
plastered in 1950 to mark Napier s elev-
ation to city status, after its population
had reached the required level of 20,000.
The new $18 million museum and art
gallery is expected to be completed by
