Historic win for Zaloum
Zoomin Zach Zaloum saved
what was shaping up as a horror
home meet for Hawke s Bay s
karting community, when he
successfully defended his North
Island Rotax Max Heavy class
title at Roys Hill in Hastings on
With drivers like five-time
national karting champion Mad-
die Wise within their ranks,
Hawke s Bay drivers were
expected to feature prominently
at the championships. But in the
end, Zaloum was the only local
to claim a crown and in doing so
became the first karter in 55
years to win consecutive North
Island Rotax Max Heavy titles.
Zaloum was also attempting
to win the Yamaha Heavy class
but had a nightmare of a race on
Saturday. After winning the pre-
final by over half a straight,
Zaloum was taken out by Aust-
ralian driver Lane Moore on the
first corner of the final to end his
hopes. The encounter made for a
fascinating final in the Rotax
Max heavies on Sunday, with
Zaloum having to chase down
Moore in pole position.
But Zaloum, 20, held his
nerve to take victory in the
24-lap race in front of his home
crowd, on his home track. I had
to keep calm and really focus on
the task at hand, and complete
every lap without faulting.
