Eyes to the skies: RNZAF Red Checkers team will show off their skills during this year's Art Deco
Celebrations take to sky
Celebrating the Royal New
Zealand Air Force s 75th anni-
versary, the Red Checkers
team will show off their skills
in Napier during the
upcoming Art Deco Weekend.
Chosen as the theme for
this year s Geon Art Deco
Weekend, the RNZAF will
entertain in the sky and on
Napier Aero Club president
Len Searle said a large num-
ber of vintage airplanes would
be flying in for the weekend of
February 17 including a De
Havilland Dragon Rapide
This aircraft, originally
designed in 1933, became the
main stay short haul passen-
ger aircraft used by commer-
cial airlines all over the world.
This fully-restored aircraft
was built in 1940 and is in
Swiss Airline livery, he said.
During the weekend the De
Havilland will be offering sce-
nic flights from the Hawke s
Bay Airport -- a marvellous
opportunity to experience fly-
ing in genuine Art Deco style
Mr Searle said the public is
welcome to view a large num-
ber of privately-owned vintage
planes up close at the Aero
Club, for a gold coin donation.
Access will be through the
airport s main entrance.
Both the Warbirds Harvard
display team and the Red
Checkers air force display
team will give their usual
popular twilight displays over
Marine Pde from 7.45pm on
Friday February 17.
Also in the air will be a
World War II P40 Kittyhawk
fighter, a P51 Mustang, about
four Tiger Moths, a D.H.
Chipmunk and Piper Cub.
An RNZAF Iroquois Heli-
copter will also be on hand.
As well as the aerobatic dis-
plays, on the ground there will
be RNZAF promotional activi-
ties and a recruitment stand.
A concert by the Central
Band of the RNZAF will be on
stage in Napier s Art Deco
Municipal Theatre in Tenny-
son Street from noon Friday,
with tickets, $12, available

Napier winery Mission Estate is expanding pro-
duction and popping the cork on its first sparkling
wine in almost 50 years. New Zealand s oldest
winemaker toasted 160 years with its Fete brand
at its new winery in Napier last night. Fete --
French for party -- is the estate s first hand-
harvested sparkling wine since Methode
Traditionelle Fontanella was released in 1963.
