again be the

Napier might be the centre of atten-
tion during art deco celebrations this
week, but Hastings is also hosting a
handful of events.
The always popular art deco
fashion parade Costume Capers
returns to the Plaza of the Hawke s
Bay Opera House at 6pm Thursday
night but with some changes to the
Hastings art deco aficionado Barb
Speers is again organising the gold
coin entry event, but has handed
over the hosting gig to radio
announcer Ross Holden.
This year s effort is Art Deco
according to the young , so there s no
adults in it. Instead there are kids
aged from seven to 17 in the show
dressed in all sorts of deco duds.
And as this is also the 75th anni-
versary of the founding of the
RNZAF, I am incorporating some-
thing to do with flying in the pro-
gramme, said Mrs Speers.
That same night is the Black Tie
Ball in the Assembly Room of the
Opera House, where the well-heeled
set will dance the night away to the
sounds of the Hawke s Bay Jazz Club
In the Hastings CBD on Friday
from 11am is the Madness in the
Mall art deco sale, where many local
stallholders will be selling genuine
men and women s clothes, jewellery,
headwear and other accessories from
On Friday from 1pm, the Royal
New Zealand Navy Band will be
playing at the Opera House.
On Saturday night people can get
along and enjoy a good old-fashioned
singalong at the Hawke s Bay Song
and Opera Workshop s annual art
deco concert at the Hastings Com-
munity Arts Centre.
Puttin on the Ritz is the name
for the group s eighth annual con-
cert, which this year has been shifted
The arts centre is the ideal venue
to stage a concert based entirely on
Art Deco songs from the 1920s and
30s, says concert director Anita
Hawke s Bay opera singer William
Winitana is once again MC of the
event and will join the large concert
cast in songs of the glamorous era,
backed up by a three-piece band led
by musical director Teresa de Vreis
Mrs Davies said there would be
prizes for the best dressed male and
female in art deco gear, and the
crowd would be invited to join in a
good old fashioned singalong.
The audience knows the score --
they will be given song sheets with
all the words, she said.

art deco finery enjoying their favour-
ite tipple and having a spiffing good
Puttin on the Ritz, 6.30pm on
February 18. Tickets cost $12,
including finger food, available now

Russell St. A cash bar will also be
operating. Door sales on the night.
There will be free music
performances at the Hastings CBD
stage every day this week until
Saturday from 11.30am to 1.30pm.
