The seven years of tremendous
effort John Buck has put into
the rejuvenation of Hawke s Bay
Opera House was recognised
last week, as he vacated his seat
as chairman of the board.
The Hastings District Council
hosted a function in the opera
house on Wednesday, inviting
those who had shared Mr Buck s
journey as he raised more than
$6 million for the work, then
presided over the board.
Mayor Lawrence Yule said Mr
Buck, 71, was the instrumental
driver in making this facility
His contribution should not
be underestimated. And he
leaves the board, and this
facility, in a fantastic space.
Mr Yule said the success of
the opera house project was the
proudest thing I ve done in my
time as mayor .
Mr Buck said the praise
should be shared in the com-
munity. Fundraising for the
project had shown him generos-
ity in this community that is

decided to do the job once and do
it properly, and the price went
up to more than $6m .
