Sharp skills: Alex Harper, 23, from The Village
Butcher in Havelock North, is the 2013 Alto
Young Butcher of the Year for the Lower North
Island. His boss Paul Greaney is in the
background with Alex's trophy.

By CLINTON LLEWELLYN
For someone with plans of one day becoming
a police officer, Alex Harper is doing a great
job of being a butcher.
The 23-year-old from The Village Butcher in
Havelock North recently won Retail Meat
New Zealand's Alto Young Butcher of the
Year award for the Lower North Island at
Palmerston North on July 6.
To win the regional final, Harper had to
complete a 30-minute written exam, an inter-
view and a two-hour cutting exam.
The secret to a good cut of meat was treat-
ing the protein with respect'', he said.
You've got to know what you're doing,
know what you're talking about, where it
comes from, and treat it with respect,'' he said.
It's pretty cool to be able to turn something
ugly, like a big hunk of meat, into something
appealing that people want to buy.''
His boss, Village Butcher owner Paul
Greaney, said the recognition was not only
good for his young employee and his business,
but for the profession as a whole.
It shows people that there are still real
butchers out there who know what they are
doing, and that we're not going anywhere,'' he
Mr Greaney had planned on entering the
competition himself, as this was the final year
he was eligible, given his age.
He had to pull out at the last moment, but
not because he was scared of the competition,
Unfortunately the competition ended up
being on a Saturday, so one of us had to stay
to open up,'' said Mr Greaney, who took over
the Joll Rd butchery just over 12 months ago.
Despite his obvious skill with a butcher's
knife, Harper revealed he was considering a
career change down the track.
I do have aspirations of becoming a police
officer one day but [being a butcher] is about
getting some life experience in first,'' he said.
His boss was not too keen on losing his
young staff member.
He's not going anywhere. Well, when I
unlock his chain to the butcher's block, then
he can go,'' he joked.
Harper is among 10 regional winners that
will attend the national finals at a black-tie
event in Auckland next month.
Up for grabs is a study tour to Britain,
where the winner will get to support the
national butchery team, the Pure South Sharp
Blacks, as they defend their title in a Butch-
ery Tri-Nations tournament.
