Folding roof: Citroen's DS3 Cabrio
opens up with an electric-powered
Four years ago, French car maker
Citroen launched a new range of
cars designed to push the marque
It called it DS, after the classic
model from the 1960s and 1970s.
So there was a DS3, a DS4 and
finally a DS5 using the same drive
trains and floor pans as the standard
Citroens but with quite different
funky-styled body and interiors.
The DS line ends up being a good
move for Citroen. Since it was
brought in, some 360,000 DS cars
have been sold worldwide and
around half of Citroens sold in New
Zealand are DS3, DS4 and DS5
The three-door DS3 was last week
joined by a new Cabrio model which

The electric, sliding, fabric roof is

that comes off, the side windows

additional structural reinforcement

another 25kg to its weight. So the
DS3 Cabrio performs similarly to its
hardtop sibling and with
The soft-top will fold back in just

speeds of up to 120kmh.
The DS3 Cabrio is available in two
models: the Cabrio D-Style is
powered by the same 88kW 1.6-litre
engine used in the C3 and DS3. This
car gets a four-speed automatic
transmission, sits on 16-inch alloys
and is priced at $38,990. For another
$2000 comes the DS3 Cabrio D
Sport with a more powerful 115kW
turbocharged 1.6-litre engine
matched to a six-speed manual
transmission and with 17-inch alloys.
Spec and styling features of the
Cabrio are similar to the hard-top
car.At the same time as the launch of
the DS3 Cabrio Citroen NZ also
presented its new diesel- powered
The DS5 HDI is powered by a

BMW presented its electric car
future with the unveiling of the i3
The new electric car was
unveiled simultaneously in New
York, London and Beijing, and will
get its first public presentation at
the Frankfurt Motor Show in
The car's premiere comes two
years after BMW's i3 Concept was
presented at Frankfurt.
BMW said the i3 is the first
premium electric vehicle designed
from the ground up to be
powered by an electric drive
It said it also brings together a
visionary design, pioneering
technology and an innovative
vehicle concept that includes a
passenger cell made of carbon-
The car maker said the i3 is the
result of an integrated
development approach aimed at
cutting fuel consumption and
emissions in urban traffic.
The vehicle concept and drive
system were developed in-house.
The 125kW electric motor of the
BMW i3 enables emission-free
driving over a range of between
130 and 160km.
Special car going
up for auction
Bidders please: A British auction
features wheels driven by Queen
''One careful lady owner'' will take on a
whole new meaning when this Daimler
limousine heads to auction at the end
of this month.
That ''one careful lady owner'' is
none other than Britain's Queen
Elizabeth and the 2001 Daimler Super
V8 LWB limousine, with just 24,529
kilometres on the clock, will be
auctioned in Britain on August 31.
Befitting a ruling monarch, the car is
equipped with several bespoke
features, including a factory-adapted
centre armrest that features a sliding
holder specifically designed for Her
Majesty's handbag, allegedly a
consequence of having nowhere to put
it when driving in the company of the
Lady-in-Waiting or security personnel.
The car, which was tested over
4000km by its manufacturer before
delivery, has graced the driveways of
the most majestic homes in Great
The Queen drove the car within the
Windsor Castle estate and to and from
Buckingham Palace, for both private
and official functions, covering about
17,700 kilometres during the three
years it was in her possession before
the car was handed back to the Jaguar
Daimler Heritage Trust, with whom the
vehicle is still registered today.
Other features of the car include the
vehicle's ashtray which has been
crafted to house the security lighting
controls, which remain fully
This includes a set of blue flashing
strobes occupying the front fog lamp
inserts, alternate flashing headlamps
and alternate flashing rear lights.
A further feature is a pair of neon
blue lights by the rear view mirror,
which were used to identify the vehicle
in which the Queen was travelling
when approaching her destination.
Aside from these bespoke changes,
this regal Daimler, powered by a 4-litre
supercharged V8 developing 375bhp, is
luxuriously equipped, and features an
opulent soft hide interior with deep
lambswool floor rugs.
The car has a full service history and
is sold with all original documentation,
two sets of keys, the original
registration number, along with
photographs of Her Majesty driving
and being driven in it.
The car has an estimated auction
value of NZ$47,000-NZ$57,000.

Personal transport: Toyota's
Winglet goes to trial in the
Japanese city of Tsukuba.
Toyota has come
up with its version
of the Segway.
car maker said its
let will be tested on
ments in a three-
year trial to assess
its safety and prac-
ticality for moving
It will be used by
80 local authority workers and National Institute
of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology
employees in a part of the city that has hosted
mobility robot test programmes since 2011.
Toyota first presented Winglet five years ago. It
is a compact, lightweight two-wheeled machine
ridden standing up and maneuvered by a vertical
T-bar handle -- adjustable to address user height
When not in use, Winglet can be folded up and
It is powered by a lithium-ion battery and has a
range of about 10km on a full charge. Top speed is
about 6kmh and battery charging takes an hour.
Toyota says that because the Winglet's perform-
ance is emissions-free it is also suitable for use in
some indoor environments, for example in airports
or office complexes.
The Segway was the first of this type of personal
transporter. It went on sale in 2001 and uses
computers and electric motors in the base to keep
it upright. It can reach speeds of up to 20kmh.
